Rave Reviews for kairos by @ariestess!

I have to say that this story was beautiful, and I want to thank you for sharing it with us. Everything about the narrative felt so gracefully and carefully constructed, and it fell together really well. The way it reads isn’t seamless, as there are time jumps, but in the end, the entire work /was/ seamless. It all felt complete and whole and unified by the end, and it was seriously amazing to read it and watch it come together, literally like a puzzle. … The whole story was feels. From the pain that we endured at the first chapters to this bursting happiness at the last ones made the whole story a bumpy ride of emotions! You job was amazing and I felt blessed for being able to read it. So thank you for that! … I think the way the fic handles imperfection makes it exemplary and outstanding. It was honest and real and raw, wrapped up in a happy story. None of it is easy, reading the fic was intense, and the fact that I said “oh god i don’t want to read this” but couldn’t have stopped if my life depended on it, says a lot. Also I love that we were literally on an emotional roller coaster WITH Emma and that was really awesome in an emotional torture kind of way. … Good god i’m so glad to started reading this in spite of the warnings/additional tags, i’m so glad that turned out differently than expected! This was such a good twist on the season 6 finale, I really enjoyed how you delved into Emma’s psyche and then slowly unraveled the plot. … I liked the way you incorporated canon into this and pushed at its envelope then brought it back again and twisted it into a nice knot. … Challenging yourself to write from Emma’s POV was such an excellent choice. … I’m really appreciative that you stuck by this fic and worked as hard as you did to share it. It’s amazing, and I’ve read other things of your, and they’re all amazing, but this one really did stand out, like color appearing in a black and white world 😉 But seriously, you did amazing. And I love the title too! I love all of it. Thank you so much again <3

Emma frowns, forcing herself to take slow, deep, measured breaths to stave off the irrational hatred and anxiety that this woman always invokes. “You know I do, Madam Mayor. Henry needs me.”

Fiona laughs at that. “Henry needs stability, Emma, something you’ve yet to prove you can provide him. The boy is fourteen and needs a firm hand to guide and mold him into the man he’s destined to become.”

“All due respect, Fiona, but you don’t have any say about what my son is destined to become.”

“Just put the book in the incinerator, Emma,” Fiona coos in her ear. “Let it burn and accept that these delusions are bad for you and for Henry.”

“No, no, dear, you know this is what you need to do. If you do this, I’ll put in a good word with the proper authorities to ensure you stay in Henry’s life. I’ll even let him come to visit you more often. You’d like that, wouldn’t you?”

Emma looks down at the book, tears blurring her vision. “All I want is my family,” she whispers raggedly.

Art Spotlight: Lost moments [fanart for kairos by ariestess69] by @alqua-taari!

Ohh this is just perfect. I’m so emotional just looking at it. … I love the drawings that are on the table: the swan and the apple. It’s a nice attention to detail. Just Emma’s expression from the color version to the black and white show how different she is in the two settings. Great job! … I love how simple and clear this artwork is, having Emma below in black and white and above in a happier moment in color with Henry and Regina. Pretty much says it all even though I have yet to read the fanfic that goes with the story. That’s my next stop. 🙂 … Oh wow! This turned out so incredibly! I love how you did the coloring on the title! And the food fight! *flails* It’s just so incredibly wonderful! … Oh this is so beautiful but I feel like I’m going to need loads of tissues for this. Emma’s in the black and white and Henry and Regina are in color that speaks so much to me. … The whole story summed up in one picture literally! You even used the colors that Emma would point out in the entire story! The blue, which according to her was her favorite color, reminding her of Henry’s baby blanket, to the black and grey of her time in the hospital. Amazing job! Well done!

She looks down at the sketch she’s been working on this morning. A picture of Regina and Henry together and smiling. It’s one of the last good memories she has of them before the accident happened that changed their lives entirely. They’d been eating breakfast, the three of them, and Regina started a food fight that wound up leaving them all covered in flour, whipped cream, and strawberry bits. In the picture, Henry’s face and hair are smeared with white, a smattering of red here and there, and a huge dollop of cream on his nose. His eyes are wide with surprise, crossing as he tries to focus on the addition to his face. Regina’s forehead is resting against his temple, eyes closed with delicate crow’s feet more pronounced around them as she laughs, nose wrinkled up and mouth open. Emma remembers having taken a picture of it at the time, but she doesn’t have her phone now, so all she has is her memories to draw on, as unreliable as they’ve been due to the meds.

“That’s a lovely drawing.”

Fiona’s cultured accent breaks into Emma’s thoughts and she flushes, quickly closing the book and holding it to her chest.

“You should be proud of your work, Emma. It suits you and could earn you a tidy little supplementary income if you’re ever released.” Her smile is as oily as a snake oil salesman’s. “And you do want to get out, don’t you?”

Today, we spotlight kairos!

Can you trust yourself to know what is real and what is merely a dream? What if your dreams feel more real than reality? @ariestess’s kairos explores these questions in this take on the season 6 finale – with a twist. Emma is struggling with the loss of her soulmate as her mental health seems to be taking a turn for the worse: she finds that her dreams – memories of happier times – progressively grow more vivid and peculiar as time passes, making her question not just her own sanity but everyone’s insistence that she has to let go of these memories. However, when faced with the danger of also losing her son forever, Emma has to decide whether to live in the reality she knows – or whether to chase after the past her dreams keep promising her is actually just about within reach. Together with the heart wrenching artwork by @alqua-taari, this story will surely leave you wishing for a box of tissues; so grab a few before you delve into this emotional story, you may indeed shed a tear, or two, or a dozen.

Group therapy comes after naptime. It takes the first half hour of the two hour slot for everyone to be awake enough to actually talk coherently. Well, there are a few people who never get coherent. She always does the bare minimum required in group, hating to bare her secrets, her issues, with these strangers.

Afternoon meds at three-thirty, followed by the only free time she has all day from three-forty-five until five-thirty. She tends to stay in her room then, working on sketches of her dreams or just working out. It all depends on how her dreams and group go.

Dinner tends to taste like better than average TV dinners, but it’s palatable enough to fill her belly. That’s all she can ask. After dinner is free time for two hours, usually spent zoning in front of the TV, then forty-five minutes of journaling about her day as part of her therapy process. Last meds are at eight-forty-five and lights out is at nine. She hates lights out because they lock the doors. It makes her feel like she’s back in prison, which she is in a way, and the anxiety kicks in hard enough each night that Dr. Hopper prescribed meds to help her sleep. They cause total blackout sleep, no dreams to help her through the long hours, and she wakes up groggily at six a.m. with the slamming of her door to start the process all over again.
